The Platform Shift Most Businesses Missed

Five years ago, a business with a strong Facebook page, consistent posting, and a modest advertising budget had a viable digital marketing strategy. Today, that same approach yields a fraction of the organic reach and is increasingly irrelevant to the demographics that matter most for many product categories.

The shift in audience attention has been dramatic:

  • Short-form video (Reels, Shorts, TikTok) now dominates content consumption for most demographics under 40
  • Search behaviour is changing as AI-powered search tools increasingly provide direct answers rather than sending users to websites
  • Social commerce is collapsing the funnel between discovery and purchase on platforms like Instagram and YouTube
  • Newsletter and community platforms are experiencing a revival as audiences seek curated, trusted sources away from algorithmic feeds

Most small businesses, particularly in India, are still operating with strategies built for the 2019 digital landscape.

What Actually Works Now

The marketing strategies that are producing results for small and medium businesses in the current environment share a few characteristics:

Video-first content: Businesses that have built genuine short-form video competency - not polished ads, but authentic, value-adding content - are consistently outperforming those relying on static image posts.

Platform specificity: Rather than maintaining a mediocre presence across five platforms, the businesses performing best are excellent on one or two platforms that are genuinely right for their audience and product.

Creator partnerships: Collaborating with niche micro-influencers and content creators - particularly those with highly engaged audiences in relevant categories - produces better ROI than equivalent spend on traditional advertising for many product categories.

Content that educates and builds trust: Audiences have become increasingly sceptical of direct promotional content. Content that genuinely helps the audience - teaches something, solves a problem, provides useful perspective - builds the trust that eventually converts to purchase.

The AI Layer

AI tools are beginning to reshape digital marketing significantly:

  • AI-assisted ad creative testing - generating and testing multiple creative variants at a scale that was previously impossible for small businesses
  • Personalisation at scale - email and messaging personalisation that previously required enterprise tools
  • Content production - generating content at higher volumes to feed algorithmic platforms

The risk for small businesses is treating AI as a shortcut rather than a leverage tool. AI-generated content that lacks genuine brand voice and audience insight performs poorly. The businesses seeing results are using AI to amplify genuine strategy, not to substitute for it.
